Port of Astakos

The port of Astakos is located on the middle of the Western coast of Greece, facing Italy. It belongs to the Prefecture of Aetoloakarnania, one of the most underdeveloped regions in Greece. It is the only private commercial port in Greece with a Free Trade Zone status. The total port area is 2.000.000 sq.m. including also an Industrial Estate, unique characteristic among all Industrial Areas in Greece that have also no direct sea access. Akarport S.A. is the company that manages the port and also the administrator of the Free Zone. The port of Astakos is a multi purpose port operating a Container Terminal, a Bulk and General Cargo terminal, a Ro-Ro terminal offering services to cargoes with final destination in Greece but also transshipment cargoes for Adriatic, Balkan, Black Sea and Middle East ports. It is the 3rd in the rank commercial port of the country. Akarport S.A. offers to its customers the benefits of an industrial estate, a free trade zone and a private port unique in its operational capacity in Greece. Akarport by being an EPIC 2020 partner, will be given the chance by applying the bioenergy resource based symbiotic port concept to develop the port industrial area in a sustainable way. At the same time will contribute to increase competitiveness and profitability of the new green economy jointly with the local community and the Small to Medium size businesses located in the port-hinter land region. The starting point for the port of Astakos has been to conduct a study in order to estimate the bio-energy potential of the region and to map the existing in the port bio-energy flows with the direct involvement of key stakeholders
